Firefighters rescued 52 families from a building in Dhaka's Wari on Wednesday after a fire broke out at a chemical warehouse located on the third floor of the complex.
Addressing a press briefing, Deputy Director of Dhaka Fire Service and Civil Defence Md Saleh Uddin said four fire engines brought the blaze under control around 7:00 am, around two hours after it ignited, reports BSS.
The fire originated at a chemical warehouse located on the third floor of the 12-storey Mamun Plaza at Hatkhola Road around 5:00 am on Wednesday, he said.
Three floors of the building are being used for commercial purposes, while the remaining nine floors house 52 residential flats.
The deputy director added that all residents were safely evacuated by firefighters.
He condemned the operation of a chemical warehouse in such a building, saying it put the lives of 52 families at risk while flouting fire safety rules, adding that drives against illegal chemical businesses in residential buildings would continue.
Saleh Uddin further said the warehouse did not have a Data Reporting Service Provider (DRSP), a primary requirement to operate a chemical business, which helps firefighters determine the appropriate method to bring fires under control.
There were no reported casualties.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage could not be known immediately.
