The holy Ashura, marking the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussein (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), at the battle of Karbala, will be observed in the country on July 6.
The announcement came following the sighting of the new moon marking the start of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar year 1447 Hijri, on Thursday evening. As the month begins on Friday, Ashura will fall on the tenth day, corresponding to July 6, according to a press release issued by the Islamic Foundation.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee, chaired by the Religious Affairs Adviser A F M Khalid Hossain at the Islamic Foundation conference room in Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
