The government on Thursday approved a proposal to amend the Criminal Procedure Code, making it mandatory to inform the family of an arrested person within 12 hours of their capture.
The proposal was approved in a meeting of the Council of Advisers at the Chief Adviser's Office with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus in the chair.
"From now on, police members who go to arrest a person must have ID cards with them and must show it when asked," Law Adviser Asif Nazrul said at a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital after the meeting.
"After arresting someone, police must bring them to the police station and inform their family. Under no circumstances can the police take more than 12 hours to disclose the information to his/her family. If the arrested person feels sick, medical treatment must be provided," he added.
The adviser also mentioned that the reason for arrest, the names of the police personnel who made the arrest, and the members of the family contacted by police after the arrest must be recorded in written form.
Additionally, Nazrul said a list of arrested individuals must be maintained at police headquarters.
He also noted that changes were made to Section 54 of the CrPC, empowering police to arrest a person if he/she commits any crime in front of police.
Police can also arrest a person if there is a possibility of them absconding, the adviser said, adding there will be provisions for online bail, bonds and digital summons too.
