The man who allegedly poured petrol on the exhumed body of Nurul Haqur alias Nurul Pagla, which was set on fire on 5 September in Rajbari's Goalanda upazila, was arrested in Faridpur in the early hours of Sunday.
Nazrul Islam Najir, 33, was arrested in Nagarkanda during a joint operation by the Goalanda Police Station and the district Detective Branch (DB).
He was later produced before a Rajbari court and sent to jail.
According to Sharif Al Rajib, additional superintendent of police (crime & ops), Nazrul Islam Nazir has been arrested in connection with the case filed over the murder of Russel Mollah.
Nazrul was seen to pour petrol multiple times on the exhumed body of Nurul Pagla, said Sharif Al Rajib.
On 5 September, a mob stormed the grave site of Nurul Pagla in Goalanda, exhumed the body and then set it on fire on the Dhaka-Khulna highway.
Russel, a devotee of Nurul Pagla, was killed in the attack.
Nurul had over the years styled himself as a saint and garnered a substantial following.
According to protesters, Nurul Pagla and his devotees were "against Shariah".
So far, 24 people have been arrested in connection with the two cases filed over the incident. Among them, seven individuals have given confessional statements in court under Section 164.
Last Monday night, a case was filed with the Goalanda Police Station by Azad Mollah, father of Russel Mollah.
The case accuses 3,500 to 4,000 unidentified individuals of charges that include the murder of Russel Mollah, arson, destruction, theft, assault, and the burning of Nurul Pagla's exhumed body.
On Friday night, Sub-Inspector Selim Mollah of Goalanda Ghat Police Station filed another case against 3,500 unnamed accused.
So far, Apu, Billu, Sohan Sardar, Abhi Mondal Ronju, Abdul Latif, Abu Sayed, and Russel Sheikh have given confessional statements under Section 164.
