A BNP leader has filed a defamation case against Sarjis Alam, the chief organiser for the northern region of the National Citizens' Party (NCP), seeking Tk10 crore in compensation on charges of spreading propaganda involving the BNP in the murder of journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin in Gazipur.
The case was filed on Tuesday with the bench of Judge Alomgir Al Mamun of Gazipur Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court-2.
The plaintiff in the case is Tanvir Siraj, president of the Gazipur Bason Thana unit of the BNP.
The court has accepted the case and directed the CID to carry out an investigation.
Speaking to the media, Tanvir said, "Journalist Tuhin was brutally killed for filming a criminal gang. But without knowing the facts, Sarjis Alam spread various propaganda on Facebook linking the BNP to the incident, which has damaged the party's image.
"The Gazipur Metropolitan Police commissioner has uncovered the main mystery behind the murder, and he has said no political involvement was found. Therefore, following the party's instructions, I came forward as the plaintiff to file the case. I hope to get justice."
On August 7, around 8:00pm, Asaduzzaman Tuhin (38), Gazipur staff reporter for the daily Protidiner Kagoj, was hacked to death in front of Masjid Market at Chandna Chowrasta in Gazipur city.
Following the incident, Sarjis Alam, in his verified Facebook account, blamed BNP activists for the murder.
