Police recovered the body of a journalist after he was found hanging from a tree in the Jhau forest near Cox's Bazar beach.
Locals spotted the body around 9:00am on Thursday.
After photos spread online, the deceased was identified as 25-year-old Mohammad Amin, who worked as a regional correspondent for the daily Amar Praner Bangladesh.
He was a resident of Ward 1, Balukhali, in Palongkhali Union of Ukhiya.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, Mohammad Elias Khan, confirmed the incident.
"After receiving the report, police recovered the body from the scene. After preliminary examination, it was sent to the morgue at Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy."
Although the cause of death could not be confirmed, the OC speculated that Amin may have taken his own life.
"Initially, it appears to be a suicide. A bus ticket for the Chattogram–Cox's Bazar route was found in his pocket, indicating that he travelled from Chattogram at 9:20pm on September 3."
However, Amin's wallet and mobile phone were not recovered, according to his family, who also rubbished any notion of suicide.
Instead, the family claims he was murdered in a planned manner.
"My son left home two days ago. He was killed in a planned way; he could not have committed suicide," Amin's mother told the media.
The deceased journalist's uncle added, "Looking at his body, it seemed he had been strangled. The way he was hanging with the rope also appeared suspicious, because his feet were only slightly above the ground."
He added that Amin went missing two days ago after leaving home and said the family would pursue legal action.
