A youth named Arian Ibrahim (20) has been arrested by police after making an indecent post that sparked violence in Chattogram's Hathazari yesterday.
Ibrahim allegedly showed his middle finger in front of the madrasa, took a photo, and posted it to Facebook.
The post spread rapidly across social media, sparking outrage.
As tension spread, madrasa authorities urged calm over loudspeakers. However, some individuals blocked the road in the Hathazari Bus Station area and vandalised several vehicles.
Ibrahim was arrested around 7:00pm on Saturday from the Shafikiya Darbar Sharif area of Ward No. 3 of Fatikchhari Municipality.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Hathazari Circle) Kazi Tarek Aziz said, "Arian has been taken into custody for interrogation."
Although Arian claimed on his Facebook profile to be the president of the Fatikchhari Municipal Unit of the Chhatra Dal, the organization's president, Ekram Ullah Chowdhury, said, "Arian is not a member of Chhatra Dal. Action is being taken against him for spreading misinformation under the organisation's name."
Fatikchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mozammel Haque Chowdhury said, "The accused will be arrested quickly and strict legal action will be taken. The local residents have also been requested to remain vigilant."
