A businessman was hacked to death by unidentified assailants in Moulvibazar on Thursday night.
The deceased, Shah Fayzur Rahman Rubel, 42, was the owner of F Rahman Trading in the Sadaipati Market.
He hailed from Gobindpur village in Kulaura Upazila's Kadipur Union.
According to eyewitnesses, Rubel was alone in his shop on Thursday evening when three to four attackers suddenly entered his shop and hacked him indiscriminately before fleeing. Hearing his screams, nearby auto-rickshaw drivers and local businessmen rushed to the scene.
He was first taken to the Moulvibazar 250-bed District Sadar Hospital and later transferred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.
Moulvibazar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Gazi Mahbubul Haque informed that Rubel's body is currently at the district general hospital for autopsy. His family has stated that a case will be filed.
Rubel's brother-in-law, Aziz Ahmed, said, "My brother-in-law was at his shop like every other day. Around 8pm, after the attack, he came out of the shop injured and begged for his life. At that time, people nearby rushed to help him. They saw stab wounds and blood on Rubel's abdomen and neck."
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Abul Khayer of Moulvibazar Sadar Circle said, "Police began investigating immediately after the incident. CCTV footage from around the scene has been collected. The culprits will be identified and brought under the law very soon."
