A horrific attack at Saltgola Crossing in Chattogram's Bandar Police Station left a Sub-Inspector named Abu Saeed Rana critically injured on Monday night.
Bandar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aftab Ahmed confirmed the matter.
After the incident, he was rushed to Agrabad Mother and Child Hospital by his colleagues and then transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH), reports a Chattogram Correspondent.
Nurul Alam Ashiq, in-charge of the CMCH police outpost, said, "SI Rana has deep wounds on his back and head. He is currently admitted to the Surgical Day Care Unit (SDU) in ward no. 28, and his condition remains critical."
Police claimed that Abu Saeed Rana was attacked by AL supporters, who emerged from an AL procession chanting "Joy Bangla". They attacked Rana with sharp weapons, leaving him gravely wounded.
According to the Police and local sources, SI Rana, who was on duty, attempted to disperse the procession.
"The miscreants were hiding within the crowd, and they took the opportunity to launch the assault," local and police sources said.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Bandar Zone, Amirul Islam, said, "When Awami League activists attempted to bring out a procession, police intervened. At that time, a sub-inspector was attacked with sharp weapons."
Following the incident, police and army personnel arrested 18 people in a joint operation.
"We immediately launched an operation and arrested 18 suspects. None of those involved will be spared," he said.
