Police on Saturday arrested five people, including two leaders of the Swechchhasebak League and the banned Chhatra League, over the attack on police and vandalism of vehicles at the grave site of Nurul Haque alias Nurul Pagla in Rajbari's Goalanda upazila last Friday.
Goalanda Ghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rakibul Islam said on Sunday that teams of the police station and the Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested the five in a joint operation on Saturday night.
The arrestees are: Goalanda upazila Swechchhasebak League General Secretary Hiru Mridha, Ujanchar union Chhatra League Vice-President Masud Mridha, and three others - Shafin Sardar, Enamul Haque Joni, and Kazi Apu.
On Friday night, Sub-Inspector Selim Molla filed a case regarding the attack on police with the Goalanda Ghat Police Station against 3,500 unnamed accused.
According to OC Rakibul Islam, the violence erupted after Friday's Juma prayers when a religious group identifying themselves as "Touhidi Janata" held a protest rally.
The demonstrators launched an attack at the grave site of Nurul Pagla, prompting retaliation from the devotees. The clashes left one person dead and over a hundred injured.
The situation escalated further when the "Touhidi Janata" stormed the grave site, exhumed Nurul Pagla's body and set fire to it on the Dhaka-Khulna highway. As police tried to control the situation, they were met with violent resistance, leading to attacks on officers and vandalism of police vehicles.
