The low-lying areas along the Teesta river in Lalmonirhat district have been flooded due to the rise of water level in the river amid heavy rains and the onrush of upstream water.
The floodwater started to submerge roads, houses and courtyards in the low-lying areas since Wednesday morning, leaving local people in despair.
Local people said that if the river water does not recede soon, it will damage the seasonal vegetables and other crops on the fields.
Sunil Kumar, Executive Engineer of the Lalmonirhat Water Development Board, said, the Teesta is now flowing 8 centimetres below the danger level.
He also expected that the river water would soon recede.
Officials of local administration visited the flood-affected areas and assured that relief would be provided after preparing a list of affected households, said Bidhan Kanti Hawlader, UNO of Aditmari Upazila.
"We're assessing the situation and preparing to extend assistance to the affected people," he said.
According to the Flood Forecasting Warning Centre (FFWC), the water levels of all major rivers are currently flowing below their respective danger levels.
Besides, Dhaka, Barisal and Chattogram regions of Bangladesh, upstream regions of Meghalaya and Sikkim in India experienced moderate to heavy rainfall in 24 hours till 9am on Wednesday.
Moderate to heavy rainfall is likely in Dhaka, Sylhet, Khulna, Barisal and Chattogram divisions and the adjoining upstream areas of Assam and Meghalaya over the three days from July 30 to August 2.
The water levels of the Teesta and Dharla rivers in Rangpur division are rising, while the Dudhkumar river remains stable.
In Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions, the water levels of the Sarigowain, Manu and Khowai rivers are rising, while the Jadukata, Dhalai, Bhugai, Kangsha and Someswari rivers are experiencing falling water levels.
The water levels of these rivers may rise over the next 3 days, and within the next 48 hours, the Bhugai-Kangsha rivers in Sherpur and Netrokona districts may flow at the Warning Level.
In the Chattogram division, the water levels of the Gomti, Feni, Selonia, and Muhuri rivers are decreasing.
The water levels of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers are increasing and are expected to continue rising over the next 3 days
The Brahmaputra river is rising, and the Jamuna river remains stable. The water levels of these rivers may increase over the next 5 days, but they are still expected to flow below the danger level.
