Sarwar Alam, a deputy secretary (joint) within the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, who shot to fame for conducting more than 300 anti-adulteration drives, has been appointed Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate of Sylhet.
The appointment comes at a time when Sylhet has been in the spotlight, especially centring on the unabated looting of stones in Sada Pathor.
Sarwar, whose role as executive magistrate of RAB back in 2019 won him much praise, was posted and transferred in the public interest, according to a notification of the Ministry of Public Administration issued on Monday (18 August).
As an executive magistrate, Sarwar Alam was a prominent figure in anti-casino campaigns and in conducting drives against fake Covid-19 tests.
He also led the raid on the house of the late parliamentarian Haji Selim.
But his tenure has not been without controversy.
In 2021, after Sarwar was overlooked for promotion, he took to Facebook and commented on the issue. He wrote that most of the officials and employees who had fought against injustice and irregularities in their service life had been deprived and harassed, so it was wrong to take a stand against injustice in this country.
The Public Administration Ministry reprimanded Sarwar for behaving "unprofessionally".
Sarwar is an officer of the administration cadre of the 27th BCS.
