Sylhet authority on Monday transferred Companiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Azizunnahar to Fenchuganj after Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Sher Mahbub Murad was made OSD (Officer on Special Duty) over the looting incident at the famous tourist spot Sadapathar.
A notification was issued in this regard, signed by Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Khan Md. Reza-un-Nabi.
In the same notification, Fenchuganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shafiqul Islam has been transferred to Companiganj.
Azizunnahar joined as the UNO of Companiganj on January 14 this year. Since then, the looting of stones from the Bholaganj stone quarry in the upazila began, sparking criticism across the country.
Locals have accused Azizunnahar of negligence and failure to prevent the stone looting.
Facing criticism, on 12 August, Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Sher Mahbub Murad formed a three-member investigation committee.
However, controversy arose as UNO Azizunnahar, against whom allegations of inaction in preventing the looting were made, was included as a member of that very committee.
Since August 5 of last year, the famous white stones of Bholaganj and the adjacent 10-acre railway bunker have been subjected to continuous looting. Initially, the looting occurred only at night, but more recently it has taken place both day and night. As a result, the once vibrant tourist site has been completely stripped of stones, leaving it barren, while the railway bunker has been reduced to deep pits and ditches.
