People who were injured during the July mass uprising staged a protest, blocking the city's Shahbagh intersection to press their demand for the implementation of the July Charter.
The protesters gathered around 11:00am on Thursday under the banner of "July Martyrs' Families and July Warriors (Injured)."
Confirming the matter, Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Mansur told Stream that the demonstration has caused traffic congestion at the Shahbagh intersection and surrounding roads.
The demonstrators also demanded official recognition of the July Martyrs and July Warriors, along with lifelong honour, medical care, education, and welfare support for the families of the martyrs and the injured.
Their demands include state responsibility for the care of injured protesters and the families of the deceased, full coverage of medical treatment, rehabilitation, employment opportunities, and welfare expenses.
They are also calling for a guaranteed lifelong allowance, the establishment of special legal protection and support centres, prosecution of those responsible for repression during the movement in line with international standards, and the formation of an Independent Truth and Justice Commission.
On Monday, the National Consensus Commission presented a draft of the July Charter to various groups. However, parties such as Jamaat-e-Islami, National Citizens' Party (NCP), and Islami Andolan Bangladesh have raised objections to the draft.
Their main concern centres on the provision that reforms proposed in the charter will be implemented within two years of forming a government through elections.
Meanwhile, the BNP has expressed general agreement with the draft.
The National Consensus Commission aims to conclude the second phase of discussions and finalise the July Charter by Thursday (July 31, 2025).
