Former US ambassador to Bangladesh and current Strategic Adviser to Excelerate Energy, Peter D Haas, is currently in Bangladesh, according to a source.
There are reports that he is currently in Cox's Bazar to visit the Moheshkhali Floating LNG project.
Meanwhile, top leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) have been spotted at the Royal Tulip in Cox's Bazar.
On Tuesday (5 August) at 11:25am, NCP leaders Hasnat Abdullah, Sarjis Alam, Tasnim Jara, Khaled Saifullah, and Nasiruddin Patwary arrived in Cox's Bazar on Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-433.
Upon arrival, they checked in at Tulip at 12:40pm, said Saifuddin Shaheen, superintendent of police in Cox's Bazar.
An intelligence source said Haas is also staying at Royal Tulip and there is information that he would have a "meeting" with the NCP leaders. However, there is no official confirmation yet.
The NCP's media cell has dismissed the entire matter as rumour.
Contacted, Joint Member Secretary Mushfiq Us Salehin said, "They did not go to Cox's Bazar on account of any meeting. We are not even aware whether Peter Haas is in Bangladesh. There is no truth to it… a mere rumour is circulating."
NCP Chief Coordinator Nasir Uddin Patwari said, "There has been no meeting with Peter Haas. The entire thing is a rumour and propaganda. We came here for a trip. Right after checking into the hotel, we saw such reports. It's a rumour."
Meanwhile, senior fact checker Qadaruddin Shishir has rubbished claims that Peter Haas is in Bangladesh.
Citing a senior office of Excelerate Energy, he wrote on Facebook that Peter Haas never came in Bangladesh.
