Academic activities at Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) resumed on Tuesday after being suspended for more than five months, breaking a prolonged deadlock on campus and bringing relief to students.
The decision to resume academic activities came after the university's teachers' association agreed to suspend their protest programme for three weeks.
On Monday, newly appointed Vice-Chancellor Md Maksud Helali directed teachers to resume classes starting Tuesday.
Teachers had been boycotting academic duties since May 4, demanding justice over the assault on faculty members following a clash on campus on February 18.
The clash, which erupted over a demand to ban student politics, left more than a hundred people injured. That night, students allegedly manhandled the then vice-chancellor and some faculty members, accusing them of siding with the attackers.
On April 25, the Ministry of Education removed VC Muhammad Masud from his position.
Maksud Helali, who was appointed as VC last Thursday, said all stakeholders—including students, faculty members, and officials—had been consulted.
"Teachers and students have agreed that classes and investigations will proceed simultaneously," he stated.
Faruk Hossain, General Secretary of the teachers' association, said they suspended the protest programme in good faith, hoping that the administration would now address their demands.
Students welcomed the decision, as they were finally able to return to regular academic life after five months and 10 days.
