The Jatiyo Party office in the capital's Kakrail was vandalised and set on fire on Friday for the second time in the span of a week.
According to reports, around 7:00pm, a mob stormed the office and began vandalising it, eventually setting it on fire.
Around 7:30pm, police fired tear gas and sound grenades to disperse the demonstrators. A chase and counter-chase ensued between police and protesters. Eventually, police managed to drive the protesters away.
Speaking to Stream, fire service duty officer Rozina Akter said they received news of the fire at the Jatiyo Party office at 7:18pm. But they were also informed by personnel from the spot that the fire had been extinguished, she said.
Jatiyo Party leaders and activists later brought out a protest procession in front of the office.
Last Friday, there was a clash between leaders and activists of Gono Odhikar Parishad and Jatiyo Party, both of which have central offices in Kakrail. Gono Odhikar Parishad President was severely injured as law enforcers swooped on them.
The following day, the Jatiyo Party office was vandalised and set on fire.
On the same day of the latest incident, GOP leaders and activists staged a rally in protest of the attack on Nur and other leaders in Shahbagh, putting forthe a three-point demand including the resignation of the home affairs adviser. Other political parties also expressed solidarity with the rally.
Asked about it by English newspaper The Daily Star, Gono Odhikar Parishad Secretary General Rashed Khan denied any knowledge of the latest attack on the Jatiyo Party office, and said JaPa has enmity with various groups.
