The Independence Award recipient, prominent writer, educator, and essayist Jatin Sarker (90), died on Wednesday at around 2:45pm at the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH).
The news of his death was confirmed by a close associate of the family and a local journalist Sanjay Sarker.
Jatin Sarker was undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of MMCH.
He was born on 18 August 1936 in Chandpara village of Kendua upazila, Netrakona.
Sarker was the author of numerous research works, including "Pakistaner Janmo-Mrittu Darshan" (The Birth and Death Philosophy of Pakistan), published in 2005, a stand-out composition.
This book was later honored as the Prothom Alo Borshoshera Boi 1411.
Jatin Sarker was awarded the Independence Award in 2010 for his contributions as an essayist.
He received the Bangla Academy Award for his research and essays in 2008.
Additionally, the Bangla Academy awarded him the Dr Muhammad Enamul Haque Gold Medal.
He was recognised as one of the leading progressive thinkers and writers of the country.
Jatin Sarker served for a long time as a professor in the Department of Bangla at Nasirabad College in Mymensingh. He had been actively involved in cultural activities due to his professional obligations in Mymensingh since the 1960s.
He also served as president of the cultural organization Udichi Shilpi Goshthi for many years. In 2007, he began editing a journal titled Samaj, Arthoniti O Rastro (Society, Economy, and State).
Jatin Sarker leaves behind a son and a daughter.
Bangladeshi filmmaker Tanvir Mokammel made a documentary on his life which was released in 2006.
