Thursday marked the 37th day of an ongoing protest by students at Barishal University (BU), who demand infrastructure development, campus expansion, and a solution to their transportation crisis.
At 10:00pm, seven students sitting in front of the university's Academic Building-1 began a hunger strike.
Earlier in the day, the protesting students blocked the Barishal-Kuakata highway to press home their demands.
Shawkat Osman Sakkhar, one of the students on hunger strike, said the University Grants Commission (UGC) has not tried to contact them even once regarding their demands, forcing them to take such a drastic step.
Tajul Islam Taj, another student, said that they held two press conferences and even staged sit-ins.
He said if no one contacts them or makes a promise, they will continue the hunger strike.
Barishal University Proctor Rahat Hossain Faisar termed the students' demands 'reasonable', adding that they started the hunger strike because they had lost faith in the system.
He also said development work and land acquisition are ongoing.
