Press Minister at the Bangladesh embassy in Washington DC Golam Mortaza on Tuesday put to rest rumours on the whereabouts of former US ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas, saying he was in the US capital.
Posting photos of Haas taking pictures with his phone, Mortaza wrote, "One of the two people taking pictures is Peter Haas, a former US ambassador to Bangladesh. He is still in the USA this morning (9:00am Washington DC time, 5 August, 2025)."
He said the photos were taken just last Friday on the roof of the US Chamber of Commerce building in Washington DC.
"The US-Bangladesh Business Council organised a special discussion with two Bangladeshi advisers, government officials, and US businessmen. After the discussion and lunch, the authorities took everyone to the roof for a photo. This roof is a favourite place to take photos."
Throughout the day, rumours had circulated that Haas had arrived in Cox's Bazar to hold a "secret meeting" with leaders of the National Citizen Party.
Speaking to the media, NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary denied the claims of a meeting with Haas.
Senior fact checker Qadaruddin Shishir had also said the former US ambassador was not even in Bangladesh.
