The interim government on Monday sent a letter to Interpol to issue red notices against owners of three readymade garment (RMG) factories who fled abroad without paying workers' due wages and benefits.
The government has taken steps to bring the four individuals, who own three garment factories, back to the country. A letter signed by the additional inspector general of the Police Headquarters has been sent to Interpol requesting the issuance of red notices, reads a press release issued by the Ministry of Information.
The owners are - Shahadat Hossain Shamim, managing director of TNZ Group, Ittehad Ud Doula and Nabil Ud Doula, chairman and managing director of Dird Group respectively; and Mamunul Islam, managing director of Roar Fashion Limited.
"In light of allegations that the owners neglected to pay workers their rightful dues and have been staying abroad for an extended period, the government has taken the initiative to request Interpol to issue red notices against the owners of these three garment factories," the release added.
The government has taken this initiative based on cases filed by the Ministry of Labour and Employment in various courts.
Ahead of the last Eid-ul-Azha, the government announced that if the owners failed to pay, the workers' dues would be settled by selling their cars and other assets, if necessary in response to demands for payment of workers' wages and Eid bonuses.
At that time, a meeting was also held between the government and TNZ Group regarding the payment of outstanding wages and allowances.
