ATM Shamsul Huda, former chief election commissioner (CEC) of Bangladesh, has passed away. He breathed his last at his residence in Gulshan, Dhaka, at 9 AM on Saturday.
He was 83 years old at the time of his death.
According to family sources, the veteran civil servant had been suffering from various age-related health complications. When he fell seriously ill at home, he was rushed to United Hospital, where the attending doctors declared him dead.
His body is currently being kept at the hospital. His funeral and burial arrangements will be finalised once his daughter, who lives in the United States, returns home, said his brother-in-law Ashfaq Kaderi.
ATM Shamsul Huda served as the chief election commissioner from February 5, 2007, to February 5, 2012. Under his leadership, the 9th Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) election was held in 2008.
Career Background
ATM Shamsul Huda joined the Pakistan Civil Service (CSP) in 1966. After Bangladesh gained independence, he joined the Bangladesh Civil Service and held several important positions throughout his career. He served as the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) in Bagerhat, as well as Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Finance. He also served as the Managing Director of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Bank.
He retired from government service in 2000. Later, in 2007, during the tenure of the caretaker government, he was appointed chief election commissioner. During his term, he led various reforms and modernisation efforts within the Election Commission.
