The aircraft that crashed into a building of Milestone School and College is an FT-7 BGI training fighter jet of Bangladesh Air Force.
A total of 16 planes of this model were added to the BAF fleet in 2013. The FT-7 BGI is the most advanced and final production version of China's F-7/J-7 series, according to a retired army pilot.
It is a lightweight, high-speed fighter jet, designed using technology and blueprints based on the Soviet MiG-21, he said.
The aircraft was produced by Chengdu Aircraft Corporation. The series was discontinued in 2013, the year China delivered the planes to Bangladesh. More than 2,400 units of this model were produced in total.
The FT-7 BGI is capable of carrying short-range infrared-guided air-to-air missiles. It is primarily used for aerial combat, although it is also employed in close air support operations near ground level.
Initially operated only by China's People's Liberation Army Air Force, the aircraft was later exported to several countries. Outside China, Pakistan became its largest user. The aircraft has also seen combat use in Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Sri Lanka.
