The Aporajeyo 71-Odommo 24 Panel on Monday said its candidate, BM Fahmida Alam, has received threats of being gang-raped after filing a writ with the High Court centring another candidate.
At a press conference on Monday, AGS candidate Aditi Islam said the threat of gang rape was posted by a university student on his Facebook account soon after the writ was filed.
On Sunday, BM Fahmida Alam filed a writ in the High Court seeking cancellation of the candidacy of SM Farhad, the general secretary candidate of the Shibir-backed Oikko Boddho Shikkharthi Jote panel.
The HC then suspended the DUCSU polls, an order which was later stayed by the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division.
Meanwhile, condemning the rape threat, Aditi called on the administration to take action.
The Facebook ID from which the threat was made has also now been deactivated.
At the conference, Aditi said, "BM Fahmida is not involved with any student politics. She has independently joined our panel. On her personal initiative, she filed a writ against a candidate.
"No panel can interfere in her democratic right, nor did we. Nowhere in her writ petition was it mentioned that DUCSU polls should be shut down. She legally challenged another candidate."
She said allegations that the panel had conspired to shut down polls were not logical.
"Even the opposing panel's lawyer, Shishir Monir, has said, 'The writ petitioner herself did not want DUCSU polls to be shut down," she added.
Fahmida had filed the petition as she claimed SM Farhad's position is against the Liberation War of Bangladesh, while he was actively involved with the banned Chhatra League.
Meanwhile, following BM Fahmida's writ, the HC ordered the suspension of the DUCSU election on Monday.
After that, the university administration filed an appeal in the Chamber Judge Court seeking a stay on this order.
Later, the Chamber Judge Court suspended the High Court's ruling. As a result, the obstacle to the DUCSU election has been removed for the time being.
