Police sprang into action, using water cannons and firing sound grenades, to disperse protesting dismissed members of the then Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), now known as Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and their family members near the capital's Kakrail Mosque on Monday morning.
The protesters had been marching towards the Chief Adviser's Residence, Jamuna.
At the start of July, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) had reinforced a ban on rallies around the chief adviser's official residence Jamuna.
Police had urged the protesters to send a delegation to meet the chief adviser and vacate the Kakrail intersection within 10 minutes. When demonstrators refused, police used force to disperse them.
Amid yesterday's protests, traffic movement ground to a halt, leaving various avenues gridlocked.
The dismissed personnel were demonstrating to press home their three-point demand, including reinstatement of their jobs and renaming the BGB to BDR.
Earlier, several protesters said although a commission had been formed to address their concerns, no resolution was in sight.
The members were dismissed following the 2009 Pilkhana carnage.
