The Chittagong University unit of Chatra Shibir on Saturday (6 September) issued a statement rejecting the remarks made by the Jamaat leader.
In the statement, the organisation also expressed regret over the comments made by their office secretary, who was present at the event.
According to the statement obtained by Stream, the Chittagong University unit of Chatra Shibir rejected the arrogant and derogatory remarks made by Jamaat leader and party MP candidate Sirajul Islam.
Speaking at an event on Friday, Jamaat leader and party MP candidate Sirajul Islam said the Chittagong University campus area belonged to Jobra village locals and they were the true landlords.
In a viral video, he was also heard saying. "We will not accept any interference. If the university does not give us 'proper respect,' we will do whatever needs to be done."
Islam said the campus was established on ancestral property.
"We are the landlords, aren't we? Can we accept anyone interference with the landlords? Never! We have not accepted it in the past, and we will not accept it in the future either," Sirajul said during a meeting with Jobra village residents.
On 31 August, more than 30 students of Chittagong University were injured in a violent clash with local residents for Jobra village near the university's Gate No. 2, following an alleged incident of harassment of a female student.
"This university is standing on our chest. We are the owners of this place, and that is why we will not accept any injustice…We will create an environment where respect is given. If the university does not give us proper respect, then, InshaAllah, we will do whatever needs to be done with the people in the future."
Also speaking at the event, the office secretary of CU Chhatra Shibir Habibullah Khaled said, "The recent incident has happened due to misunderstandings. The real miscreants are not from this area; they have come from outside. They must be arrested."
He also called upon the locals to handover the perpetrators of the violence.
After the speech went viral on Thursday evening, students of Chittagong University gathered in front of the university's Gol Chattar, AF Rahman Hall, and Shaheed Forhad Hossain Hall and staged a protest rally around 2:00am on Friday.
In the rally, students chanted slogans such as "Zamindari over Chittagong University will not be tolerated"; "Bootlickers in power, light the fire together"; "Agents of miscreants, beware, be warned"; "We will not let our brother's blood go in vain" and others.
Responding to the developments, the CU Shibir also said office secretary Habibullah Khaled's statement was to conceal the misdeeds of actual criminals and amounted to granting impunity to local perpetrators.
