Cars carrying media personnel were attacked by 'Awami League' supporters in Gopalganj while they were leaving a rally organised by the National Citizen Party (NCP).
"We are stranded in the middle of being attacked from all sides. My car has been vandalised. The situation is dire. We don't know what's going to happen," a Dhaka Stream reporter, who was in one of the cars, said in a voice clip sent around 3:00pm amid escalating violence.
NCP leaders said the attackers were activists of the Awami League.
Clashes have been ongoing between law enforcement forces and AL supporters since around 1:45pm, when a group of 200 to 300 locals, armed with sticks and clubs, stormed the Municipal Park in Gopalganj, the venue for the NCP rally.
Eyewitnesses said that as the group of 200 to 300 advanced toward the rally grounds, police officers stationed nearby quickly took shelter in the courthouse compound.
At the same time, NCP leaders and activists who were on or near the stage vacated the area in haste.
NCP's event in Gopalganj is part of the fledgling party's planned appearances in all 64 districts of the country.
Gopalganj, the birthplace of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is an Awami League stronghold.
