Jamaat-e-Islami said on Sunday that through his writings, Badruddin Umar contributed significantly to the establishment of democracy, freedom of speech and human rights in Bangladesh, Jamaat-e-Islami said on Sunday.
Eminent intellectual, veteran politician and progressive thinker Badruddin died on Sunday morning at the age of 93.
In a condolence message from Jamaat Secretary General Golam Parwar, the party expressed profound grief over Badruddin's passing.
Parwar said that in the 1960s, Badruddin played a significant role in shaping cultural consciousness during the pre-Liberation War period and influencing the independence movement through his writings on nationalism, religion, and politics.
"Although he was awarded the Independence Award, the highest civilian honour in Bangladesh, in 2025, he refused to accept it," reads the message referring to Badruddin's altruistic attitude.
"I express my sorrow at his passing and pray for the forgiveness of his soul. At the same time, I extend my deepest condolences to his bereaved family, relatives, well-wishers, and colleagues," the message concludes.
