Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has strongly condemned the recent violence in the Hathazari madrasa area of Chattogram, calling the incident a "terrorist attack" and a part of a deep-rooted conspiracy.
"Hathazari Madrasa is the country's oldest and largest Islamic educational institution. An attack of this nature is a clear provocation and part of a deeper conspiracy. Any act of desecrating sacred religious spaces such as mosques and madrasas is unacceptable. These institutions are tied to the faith and beliefs of Muslims, and it is everyone's duty to show them due respect," Jamaat said in its statement on Sunday.
Jamaat's Secretary General, Professor Mia Golam Porwar, said, "Such an attack is a malicious attempt to create division and incite violence in society. I urge the authorities to swiftly arrest those responsible for this terrorist attack and ensure exemplary punishment. I also call on all to act responsibly on social media and refrain from actions that may hurt religious sentiments."
The incident unfolded on Saturday during a Jashn-e-Julus rally marking Eid-e-Miladunnabi, when a youth, identified as Arian Ibrahim, allegedly made obscene gestures toward the Hathazari madrasa and mosque as the procession passed by. He later shared a video of the act on social media, which sparked outrage among madrasa students. When they protested, they were reportedly attacked by a group that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has described as "terrorists" in the statement.
Jamaat claimed that more than a hundred students from Hathazari Madrasa were seriously injured in the attack, which it described as "brutal and barbaric."
