In a meeting with US Embassy Charge d'Affaires Tracey Ann Jacobson, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin on Monday expressed confidence that Bangladesh's political parties will reach an understanding before the upcoming election in the country's greater interest.
CEC Nasir briefed of their conversation following the meeting.
"Although different political parties currently hold divergent positions, in the end, they will place the country's welfare first and come to a common position.
"Our political parties work for the sake of the nation. They make decisions with the country in mind. So, ultimately, they will come to an understanding," he said he told Jacobson.
He also informed her that the chief adviser has already taken initiatives toward a political resolution. Earlier, the responsibility of building consensus was entrusted to the Election Commission, but since yesterday, the chief adviser himself has directly initiated political discussions.
The CEC also said, "We have observed that he has begun discussions on his own initiative. This means he is taking an active role in ensuring a political resolution."
"I clearly told her one thing — earlier, there were differences among the political parties: some wanted the election sooner, some later, and there were various kinds of tensions and disagreements. Because of that, it may have taken a little extra time to finalise the election schedule," he added.
He also mentioned that Jacobson inquired about law-and-order situations and mob culture.
"I assured her that there would be no mob culture after announcing the schedule," the CEC said.
About their preparation of the polls, he informed the US envoy that under no circumstances should there be any allegation that the Election Commission was unprepared. We want to ensure that no such questions arise about the election. That's why we will remain fully prepared.
"The government has decided to hold the election, and the EC will be ready to deliver. We are not willing to take any kind of blame," he highlighted.
"I informed her this clearly that we have already taken preparations in line with this goal."
