The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday decided to file a case against Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy, son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on charges of amassing nearly Tk60 crore in illegal wealth and money laundering.
"An investigation has found assets worth a total of Tk 61 crore 18 lakh 5,869 under the name of Sajeeb Wazed. Of this, immovable property amounts to Tk 54 crore 39 lakh 20,978 and movable property amounts to Tk 6 crore 78 lakh 84 thousand 891," Md Akhter Hossain, director general of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), told reporters at the commission's headquarters in Segunbagicha, Dhaka.
The ACC said the illegal income of Joy, former adviser on information and communication technology, was only Tk 1 crore 32 lakh 8 thousand 542.
This means his illegal assets amount to approximately Tk 60 crore 14 lakh 73 thousand 970.
The investigation report mentioned that he acquired this vast amount of wealth by abusing his power while in office.
According to the report, Tk 54 crore 4 lakh 32 thousand 258 was spent to purchase two houses in the United States through hundi or other channels of money laundering.
In addition, the ACC found evidence of suspicious transactions amounting to a total of Tk 57 crore 50 lakh 54 thousand 315, including transactions of Tk 3 crore 46 lakh 22 thousand 57 in two bank accounts under his name.
Charges will be brought against Sajeeb Wazed under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, and Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012.
Earlier, the ACC had filed another case against him over allegations of irregularities in obtaining a plot in Purbachal.
On 11 March, following a court order, 124 bank accounts under the names of Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, her daughter Saima Wazed, along with four family members, as well as related organisations and the party, were frozen.
At that time, ACC's Public Relations Officer Akhtarul Islam had said the frozen bank accounts included not only the personal accounts of Sheikh Hasina and her family members but also the accounts of related organisations and the political party.
