Shahriar Morshed Khan, a 51-year-old student, has collected his nomination papers to run for the position of Publicity and Publications Secretary in the Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU) election on Wednesday.
Shahriar, happily married with four daughters, is currently a fourth-year student of the 2020-2021 session at the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism.
He informed Stream that he was a student of the Department of Public Administration at the University of Chittagong in 2022. However, he could not complete his graduation at that time due to family reasons, which led him to work several jobs.
Despite years away from classrooms, his longing to return to academic life burned so deeply that he courageously sat for the SSC exam again in 2017 at an age when most have long left student life behind.
Undeterred by time or obstacles, he went on to pass his HSC exams in 2020. He then stood among thousands of aspiring students and earned his place at Rajshahi University, a testament to his unbreakable spirit and love for learning.
"Being a university student in the past and even now, I have closely observed how political organisations deprive general students of their rights and crush their hopes. Once elected, their actions rarely match their promises. With this understanding, I want to stand beside the general students, represent them, and be their voice," Morshed told Stream.
"I will always strive to bring the session jam down to zero. I want to work for the improvement of medical facilities, enhance the quality of food in dining halls, and address infrastructure problems like roads and pathways."
