Liverpool's Portuguese forward Diogo Jota died in car crash near Zamora, in northwestern Spain, Spanish state-owned TV station said on Thursday, citing local firefighters, according to Reuters.
He was 28.
The accident occurred at kilometer 65 of the A-52 highway, in the province of Zamora, near the town of Palacios de Sanabria, Spanish media reported.
He was traveling with his brother André, 26, also a professional footballer for Peñafiel, who also died.
The car they were traveling in caught fire after the accident, according to witnesses.
Jota was on vacation just days before starting pre-season with Liverpool.
Just 10 days before the incident, he married Rute Cardoso, on June 22.
"The news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who greatly honoured Portugal's name, and his brother is unexpected and tragic. I extend my deepest condolences to their family. It is a sad day for football and for national and international sports," Portugal Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said in a statement.
The Portuguese forward was fresh off a Premier League title, a competition in which he made 26 appearances, scoring six goals and providing four assists.
Jota had been playing at Anfield since 2020, when he joined from Wolves.
